Wax Carving Block Course (AUGUST START)

6-week jewellery making classes

Workshop description

Over 6 weeks, you will be introduced to all the basics of the lost wax casting technique and you'll be provided plenty of freedom and guidance at each step. If you've come to a workshop before, you'll be able to get stuck right in and start creating the jewellery of your dreams! Total beginner? No problem! We'll start from the basics and you'll be creating stunning unique pieces in no time. What will I be learning? For beginners, you'll learn about the lost wax casting process and begin carving a ring or pendant from jeweller's wax in weeks 1 and 2 using a variety of tools. From week 3, you can begin creating your own designs using the skills learned during the first 2 weeks. In the final 2 weeks, we'll introduce how we finish the castings (prepping the wax models for casting, sawing sprues, filing, and polishing). What's not included? The metal costs are not included as these costs vary depending on the weight of your wax model. When your pieces are ready for casting, they will be weighed to calculate the cost. You can cast in brass, silver, or gold (gold will require advance payment). What can I make? Once you learn the basics, you can make whatever you like! Rings, pendants, earrings, or even a sculpture/ornament! I will be there to give any tips/hints along the way to ensure a beautiful result. How do these classes differ from the Wax Carving Workshop? The main difference is you'll be in charge of the entire process (except for the casting) from carving your design all the way to buffing the final piece. You'll also be able to develop your ideas over the 6 weeks and get a good understanding of how to manipulate the wax to create interesting forms. You can also learn some basic silversmithing skills too if that is something you desire (e.g., sawing and soldering)! How much is the course? $450 for the classes + $50 credit for metal costs (any unused credit can be refunded or credited towards future classes) What do I need to bring? You may wish to bring an old apron to wear during the class as it can get a little messy. Please also bring closed shoes and long hair tied back.
